NEW GAMES FOR
OLD MACHINES

NOP was founded by video game veterans who were already building games when many of these machines were still on store shelves.

After decades spent creating titles for handhelds, consoles, PC & mobile, we chose to return to a simple idea:

Small is beautiful.

We believe technical constraints are not limitations but creative tools. Limited memory, limited storage and limited processing power force stronger design decisions, more distinctive visual identities and gameplay built around skill rather than excess.

No fake retro.
No nostalgia bait.
Just new games for old machines.

Physical first.
Built from the board up.

NOP is built around one clear promise: new games delivered as real editions for real machines. Whenever the target hardware allows it, our goal is to publish on physical media — cartridges, boards, manuals and collector packaging — not only as downloadable ROM files. Digital releases may exist, but the heart of NOP is the object: something you can plug in, keep, display and play on original hardware.

Real cartridges

We aim to produce physical editions for classic systems and modern cartridge-based platforms that support them.

  • Cartridge releases whenever possible
  • Collector packaging and printed manuals
  • Designed for players and preservation
Vintage CPUs

Our team has experience with the processors that powered the 8-bit and 16-bit generations.

  • Z80-based systems and sound drivers
  • Motorola 68000 platforms
  • 6502-family and other period CPUs
Sound chips

Retro games are defined as much by their audio hardware as by their graphics.

  • FM synthesis workflows
  • PSG and chiptune audio constraints
  • YM2612, SN76489, AY-3-8910, SPC700 and more
Original hardware

Our philosophy is to respect the target machine instead of hiding behind modern abstraction.

  • Native constraints as design tools
  • Testing on real machines whenever possible
  • Gameplay built around hardware identity
We do not see cartridges as nostalgia.
We see them as the final form of the game.

Built by developers.
Made for retro players.

NOP is an independent French studio dedicated to authentic retro game development. We create new games for original hardware platforms and release physical cartridge editions for collectors and players who still believe dedicated gaming machines matter. Our team combines decades of experience across console development, handheld systems, PC and mobile games, low-level retro programming, hardware and cartridge engineering. No fake retro. No nostalgia bait. Only real games for real machines.
Long before NOP, we contributed to these projects either in the industry or as homebrews or prototypes. They reflect the same long-standing passion for retro machines, technical constraints and handcrafted gameplay that led us to create the studio.
